Great quotes about Tablet PCs from Tablet PC users

Published in

In flipping through feeds today, I've run across some very nice comments about Tablet PCs. Here are three from twitter.

OpinionatedGeek: @scribbl - I'm not sure how much serious work I could get done on my iPhone, but boy is it handy! I do love the Tablet PC interface though.

songsnchaos: @rasrasras I got tired of scanning. But I saved up and bought myself a tablet so I LOVE the PC now.

bmcbreen: @stephaniehayden Don't tell Uncle Steve, but I am enjoying my new tablet PC + MS OneNote combo; but if that pen works, it's got competition

I'm not being silent - I'm on Friendfeed and Twitter.

FriendFeed is a decent aggregator supplemented with community comments. Through friends of friends I'm exposed to more articles than I might read otherwise. Some I skim, some I "like." My FF is at  http://friendfeed.com/lora

From FF you can view my Twitter posts, if you're so inclined. It's a mix of family, travel, plus engaging the mobile PC community. Be warned - lots of comments about AJ, the treeing walker coonhound.

Tablet PC "Freaks" Welcome Expansion

On Friendfeed, Robert Scoble and Layne exchanged comments about A list bloggers and Robert replied, "You're on the 'T list' for 'Tablet PC freaks.' I'm on that list too." How true! lol I am also. You're welcome to join this list also! I'd love to see the search results for "Tablet PC" grow even faster on Friendfeed, Twitter, blogs, or your social media of choice.

Being labeled as a "Tablet Freak" has been a theme this week. OK, so it's a fairly common theme in my life. :) For example, the other day I shook hands with someone to whom I was being introduced and the person got a fuzzy look on her face. One of those, "Are you...? No... I think I know who you are," comments and then that sudden recognition of, "Oh yeah, I know you," with the eventual, you talk [way too much] about Tablet technology smile.

Do all roads in my life lead to Tablet PCs? I admit that even the other week when I was out in fields with a friend and niece putting Audubon Society number bands on kestrel chicks that I was thinking about how an ultra-thin slate (1/4" thick, all day battery life, stylus, and OneNote) would have been great to use as a field notebook. Let's settle on that I'm passionate about natural interaction and always looking for opportunities to advance it. Agreed? :)

lora with kestrels

So, yes, even if efforts like the TechCrunch Web Tablet need help, I'm willing to help. I love seeing the enthusiasm exuded by people as they learn about this concept, with a good dose of skepticism and reality. In particular, I enjoy seeing the expansion and evolution of concepts that originated from past Tablet PCs, such as with UMPCs and Netbooks, or the tremendous growth in slate form factor devices.

I'm far from alone in being a "Tablet Freak." If you want to know something about the current state of Tablet PCs, there are certain people to go to first. The "A List" of Tablet PC community experts, of sorts. From Chris Hassler helping people in the Microsoft.public.windows.tabletpc discussion group to Chris Wilkerson focusing on uses in the healthcare vertical MedicalTabletPC.com there are people who spend hours helping others solve technical issues, consult on product development, inform before purchase, test and review, and fully understand ongoing development efforts.

Here's a short list of these phenomenal people:

This list can go on and on with community members, let alone the many people at Microsoft, OEMs, IHVs, and ISVs who are beyond passionate about natural input and dedicate time to the community. Thank you for all your help. It's an absolute pleasure interacting with people who are so interested in seeing technology move forward.

"Tablet Freaks" -- or Tableteers -- is not an exclusive list and you're always welcome to join in this conversation too. ;)

Marc Orchant passed away today

Published in

Our friend Marc Orchant passed away today. Since we learned the news several of us have been sharing memories and thoughts for his family.

Marc has been a good friend to many. Earlier in the week his wife, Sue, commented online, "I’ll have to tell him that he’ll need to change his name to George Bailey (It’s a Wonderful Life). It’s a beautiful thing to see," because of the outpouring from all the lives Marc touched. It is a tribute to him. I relied on Marc quite a bit this year. Marc was extremely supportive when my brother Loren was diagnosed with cancer last December and as Loren's treatment progressed. I appreciated his kindness and thoughfulness.

Over the years, I've learned from Marc how to be a better listener and friend, as well as admired his ease of talking with anyone and his passion for education. I feel that I haven't learned enough from him yet, and will miss him tremendously.

My thoughts are with Marc's family.

Services will be Wednesday in Albuquerque, NM.

Using an older Tablet PC for family slide shows

Early last week I was in the Bay Area, so stopped at my aunt's house to pick up family slides and hand carry them to Arizona for family to watch over Thanksgiving. Getting the slides through airport security was interesting, and I learned a few tips from the on duty manager, such as use the word "vintage" to describe the slide carousel that held slides from the 1940s. He joked with me that the "kids" at the scanners don't know when the '40s were, let alone know what a slide carousel looks like. Not that I was alive then either, but point taken.

I enjoyed visiting with Marc Orchant and Jeremy Wright late Wednesday afternoon. We covered topics ranging from Tablet PCs, converging devices, devices working together, to the New England snow storm of 1978.

Marc and Jeremy are working on Microsoft Outlook and OneNote time and task management training courses. I’m a good candidate to learn and practice their methods.

I look forward to seeing them again in July, when they return to Redmond to continue their program development.

Where to find a vendor
We know we don't sell everything for everyone. We admit that you need to find a different vendor for some items. How do you find a product vendor on the Internet? It really depends on where you start, how adventurous you are, and what you already know.

Here are a few pointers:

First, know the manufacturer part number and description for the product. If you do not know this, visit the manufacturer website. Most manufacturers have specification sheets posted for their products.

Next, visit places like bizrate.com and gomez.com. They rank companies based on factors such as size of company, product selection, and customer satisfaction. Then there are bulletin boards or posts on places like resellerratings.org. You need to be a little careful with general posts.

Online shopping is promoted to be a price comparison Mecca. Tip: compare supports a vendor provides for the price you pay for your product.
It's more than for price comparisons. You can find computer and component vendors who fit your special niche, are consultants, virtual stores, system builders, component resellers, super stores, and more. All have something to offer a particular buyer.

Which Boards Work With AMD's New Processors?
"Which motherboards work with the AMD Athlon processor? Which motherboards work with the AMD Athlon processor operating at 266 MHz FSB?"

These two questions topped our email and phone call list the last couple of days. Why? Motherboard manufacturers are announcing and releasing new product for AMD Athlon processors.

Overview

1. Current AMD Athlon processors use a "Socket A" to connect to the motherboard.

2. Computer systems using these processors operate at 200 MHz Front Side Bus (FSB).

3. Current motherboards supporting AMD Duron and Athlon processors use 168-pin SDRAM memory.

Changes occurring:

1. AMD will release an Athlon processor to work at 266 MHz FSB.

2. Motherboard manufacturers are designing product to work with Athlon processor working at 266 MHz FSB. (Late February to late March.)

2A. Motherboard manufacturers are designing product to work with a new VIA chipset, KT133A, which supports Socket A AMD Athlon processors with a 200 MHz or 266 MHz Front Side Bus running at speeds of 1, 1.13, and 1.2GHz, PC133 SDRAM and VC133 DRAM.

2B. Motherboard manufacturers are designing product to work with a new VIA chipset, KT266, which supports Socket A AMD Athlon processors with a 200 MHz or 266MHz FSB, and supports up to 4.0GB of the latest high-speed DDR200/266 SDRAM at a peak bandwidth of 2.1GB per second.

2C. Motherboard manufacturers are designing product to work with AMD-760 (TM) chipset, of which the AMD-761 system controller supports Socket A AMD Athlon processors with 200 or 266 MHz FSB, and supports DDR-SDRAM at a peak bandwidth of 2.1GB per second. Note: Some motherboard manufacturers are using the AMD-761 controller combined with VIA PSIPC controller.

Today

As with all new product developments, changes in products are in steps. Today, we have motherboards that use chipsets designed to support future processors. Adjustments will be made to many of these products as the products mature. To use a cliche, change is constant. Little advancements are constantly being added to products to improve them, then there is a jump to the next product type and that product is then modified slowly. This hybridization, if you will, is the impetus of change in the computer industry.

Where do you go for information about which motherboards to use for which processors? AMD.

AMD has an excelent overview of System Integration Steps and Recommended Motherboards. You may see the Recommended Motherboard list at: http://www1.amd.com/athlon/mbl. This page is updated as product changes occur.

Which products are available today?

- AMD Athlon processors 200 MHz FSB

- Epox EP-8KTA3 motherboard - using VIA KT133A chipset and PC133 SDRAM

- FIC AD11 motherboard bundled with 128MB nonECC PC2100 SDRAM - using AMD-760 chipset and DDR-SDRAM

- Gigabyte GA-7DXC motherboard - using AMD 761 controller and VT82C686B controller and PC1600 DDR-SDRAM. This motherboard supports 200 MHz FSB only.

Why do some of the new products say they support 200 MHz FSB only?

AMD Duron and Athlon processors that are available today are 200 MHz FSB. When AMD releases Athlon processors with 266 MHz FSB to manufacturers, testing and product development will continue.

Some motherboard manufacturers will release motherboards known and approved to work with current processors then release a second model for future products.

For instance, Gigabyte's GA-7DXC is now shipping. A sticker is on the top of box marked, "This mainboard supports FSB200 CPU and DDR200 memory." Gigabyte and AMD have approved GA-7DXC revision 2.4 for use with the AMD Duron processor or AMD Athlon processors operating at 200 MHz FSB -- processors that you can buy today.

Gigabyte will release the GA-7DX revision 3.0 (or higher) motherboard at a later date. The GA-7DX will support the 200 MHz FSB, and eventually will support the the future 266 MHz FSB. Note: GA-7DX revisions may change and BIOS updates may be issued.

Which products work with Athlon processors 266 MHz FSB?

Good question. As products are released and approved by AMD for use with this future product AMD will post their recommended list at http://www1.amd.com/athlon/mbl.

Suggestions

1. Buy what you will use today.

2. As you are shopping, make a list of compatible components. Use AMD.com and motherboard manufacturers as a resource. (Use ESCstore.com too.)

Sample Lists:

Processor - AMD Athlon 1.2 GHz and Cooler Master fan
Motherboard - FIC AD11 motherboard
Memory - 128MB PC2100 DDR memory (bundled with motherboard)....

Or
Processor - AMD Athlon 900 MHz PIB (includes fan)
Motherboard - Epox EP-8KTA3 motherboard
Memory - 128MB nonECC PC133 SDRAM memory....

Take your time, read, ask questions, make lists. Then, when you receive your system you'll be able to plug it in and go.

It's a holly, jolly Holiday, a time to smile and laugh.
Al: A.J. Is that you singing?
A.J.: You bet. It's the most wonderful time of the year.
Gracie: Where did you find that digital camera, Al?
Al: Shhhhhhh. At our holiday store. I want to surprise the pup with his picture on my screensaver.
A.J. So there's no place like home for the holidays, unless I have pictures to launch from my HDD. It's a holly, jolly, Holiday....(as he pirouets away).

Al: It's about time. Get this election over.
Gracie: Now, Al, stop grumping. Did you listen to the court proceedings this morning?
Al: Didn't have to. I know how it will come out. Courts leave me no bones.
A.J.: I heard part of it. The judges interrupted the lawyers. Heh, someone took my Rook cards while I listened. I'll sue, I'll sue, I'll
Gracie: Come on, boys. Let's focus for a moment. What's more important, your bones and Rook cards, or listening to 9 judges figure out how to solve a difference of opinion?
Al: Spoil sport.
A.J.: Neither. Come play with me.
Gracie: Quiet. I'm still trying to listening while I'm working.

Salute to Darrell Waltrip
We salute Darrell Waltrip, NASCAR superstar, Franklin, TN, former neighbor, and one smart challenger of the good ol' boys who recently retired from competitive driving. His insight, skill, and valuing of each person's word as their bond changed stock car racing in the 1970s. We remember his Late Modified Chevelle in the wooden one car garage in Franklin between races at the Fairgrounds in Nashville. You came a long way from that garage. Keep up the good work. See you down the road and on the web.
